Weddings are a magical and memorable time in a young couple's life. Though often hectic the special day is a culmination of a period of planning and anticipation. On this page you will find some ideas of ways to use herbs in your wedding celebration. I can't take credit for all of these ideas as many have used them and made them their own over the years. However, I have gleaned some great ideas that I hope you will use. I can also offer my services, small or large, to help you plan your herbal wedding. Feel free to request a free herbal wedding planner as a downloadable .pdf file. Just email me at herbfarmer@bellsouth.net and request one.
Create an herb garden well in advance of your wedding to provide the herbal materials needed. Wreaths, bouquets, baskets filled with blooms, herb pots for table decorations and fresh flowers to decorate the cake can all be grown by the bride, groom or their families. If time doesn't permit or the bridal family is short of green thumbs, finding an herb farm who may be able to supply what you need is as easy as a phone call.
Herbs and flowers lend sentimentalism and symbolism to the celebration. Several books have been written about the meaning of herbs and flowers. One of the best on the subject is "Flora's Dictionary: The Victorian Language of Herbs and Flowers" by Kathleen Gips. Another good book on the subject of herbal weddings is "Herbs for Weddings and Other Celebrations" by Bertha Reppert. Herbs such as Rosemary which symbolizes "remembrance" can be included in the brides bouquet, the grooms boutonnière and of course, little pots of rosemary will be fought over and begged to be taken home from the reception. Lavender which symbolizes devotion can be added to wreaths, bouquets, chaplets attached to the bride's veil, or held as an informal bouquet. I have included just a small list of some of the herbs that can be used along with their symbolisms. |
